Geocaching gear

Geocaching starts with coordinates, but finding the cache often means leaving the easy path behind. Waterproof phone protection, hands-free light and a small pack become useful when the search moves into rain, darkness or a full day outdoors.

Keep the coordinates accessible in wet weather

A GPS-enabled phone or other GPS device leads you towards the cache location, which means it may be checked repeatedly throughout the search. Silva waterproof cases add protection when that device is being used in rain, mud or around water.

Accessibility matters as much as protection. Near ground zero, attention shifts constantly between the position on the screen and possible hiding places in the surroundings, so the device should not need to be unpacked every time the location is checked.

GPS gets you close, observation finds the cache

Coordinates identify the search area, but the final few metres often depend on reading the environment. Rocks, roots, walls and other features become more useful than staring continuously at a screen once you are close.

An outdoor compass is not a replacement for the GPS element of geocaching. It can still be useful on longer outings when caches sit away from obvious trails and you want a simple way to keep track of general direction between the search area and your route back.

Night caches put the headlamp to work

Some geocaches are specifically designed to be searched for after dark, with reflectors or other clues forming part of the route. An outdoor headlamp keeps both hands free while following markers, searching around the hiding place or signing the log.

A useful combination of close-range light and reach works well on woodland trails. Longer night-cache routes also make burn time important, and spare headlamp batteries provide additional capacity when the search continues for several hours.

Carry for the route, not just the cache

A single urban cache may need little more than a phone and pen. A series spread across several kilometres of woodland is different. Silva backpacks provide space for water, food, spare layers and equipment when geocaching becomes a longer outdoor trip.

Pack size should follow the distance, weather and terrain rather than the activity name itself. Keeping the load small on short searches makes just as much sense as carrying additional reserves on an all-day route.

Build a geocaching kit around the cache

Cache descriptions and attributes can change what is needed. For a longer search, a practical setup may include:

  • A GPS-enabled phone or GPS device with the cache information available.
  • A pen for signing physical cache logs.
  • A waterproof case when the phone may be exposed to rain, dirt or splashes.
  • A headlamp and backup power for night caches or late finishes.
  • A backpack with water, food and spare clothing on longer routes.
  • A compass as an additional navigation tool on more remote approaches.

Check the individual cache page before leaving. Some hides need almost nothing beyond the basics, while others are deliberately designed around additional tools or unusual conditions.

Frequently asked questions about geocaching gear

These are common questions about navigation, headlamps and practical equipment for geocaching.

What equipment do you need to start geocaching?

A GPS-enabled smartphone or other GPS device with access to the cache coordinates is enough to begin. A pen is also useful because many physical caches contain a logbook that finders sign.

Do you need a compass for geocaching?

No. GPS coordinates are fundamental to geocaching, so a compass does not replace the GPS device. It can be useful as an additional navigation tool on longer routes through unfamiliar terrain.

Do you need a headlamp for geocaching?

Not for most daytime caches. A headlamp becomes particularly useful for night caches and searches that continue after dark because it provides light while keeping both hands free.

How do you protect your phone while geocaching in rain?

A waterproof case provides an extra barrier against rain, splashes and dirt while allowing the phone to remain accessible for repeated position checks.

Do you need a backpack for geocaching?

Not for every cache. A backpack becomes more useful when the search involves several caches, longer walking distances or enough time outdoors to require water, food and spare clothing.
