Hammock camping gear

Hammock camping replaces a ground shelter with a sleep system suspended between trees. Silva lighting and carrying gear complement the hammock, tarp and insulation when camp needs to stay organised after dark and in wet weather.

Set up camp with both hands free

Arriving late can mean hanging straps, adjusting suspension and tensioning a tarp after daylight has faded. An outdoor headlamp keeps the work area illuminated while leaving both hands available for lines, buckles and knots.

Hammock camp tasks mostly happen within a small area, so useful close-range light can matter more than extreme distance. A stable fit, practical burn time and low weight become increasingly important when the headlamp is carried for several days.

Give the hammock area its own light

Once the sleep system is ready, a directional beam is not always the most comfortable option. A camping lamp spreads light around the hammock for organising gear, eating or settling in for the night.

The two light sources serve different purposes. The headlamp moves with you when you leave camp, while the camping lamp can remain around the hammock and tarp as a fixed source of softer light.

Keep insulation away from damp gear

Sleeping above the ground does not keep every part of the camp dry. Rain, wet vegetation and damp equipment can still reach spare clothing and insulation. Silva dry bags help separate items that need to stay protected from the gear that can tolerate moisture.

Dividing the load into different sizes also suits a hammock setup where storage space is limited. A sleeping layer, electronics or dry night clothing can be found without unpacking everything underneath the tarp.

Carry the sleep system into the woods

One attraction of hammock camping is that many systems pack down small enough for hiking and lightweight overnight trips. Silva backpacks provide carrying space for the sleep system alongside clothing, lighting and other essentials.

Pack volume depends heavily on the season. A summer hammock, tarp and light insulation can take relatively little space, while a colder setup with a substantial underquilt, sleeping bag and extra layers needs much more room.

Hammock camping packing list

Silva gear complements rather than replaces the hammock sleep system. A practical overnight setup can include:

  • A hammock with wide, tree-friendly suspension straps.
  • A tarp or rain fly above the hammock.
  • An underquilt or another form of insulation underneath you.
  • A sleeping bag or top quilt suited to the expected temperature.
  • A headlamp for setup, camp tasks and moving around after dark.
  • A camping lamp for softer fixed light around the sleeping area.
  • Dry bags for insulation, clothing and other items that should remain protected.

Bug protection, additional cord and other items depend on location, weather and season. Keeping the setup focused on the conditions makes it easier to avoid unnecessary weight.

Frequently asked questions about hammock camping gear

These are common questions about lighting, packing and Silva gear for nights spent in a hammock.

Do you need a headlamp for hammock camping?

A headlamp is particularly useful when setting up or adjusting the hammock and tarp in low light. It also gives you hands-free light whenever you need to move away from camp during the night.

Is a camping lamp useful in a hammock?

Yes. A camping lamp provides broader fixed light around the sleeping area, while a headlamp is more practical when walking or carrying out tasks that require light to follow your gaze.

How do you keep hammock camping gear dry?

A well-positioned tarp protects the sleeping area, while dry bags help separate sleeping insulation, dry clothing and sensitive items from damp equipment during transport and at camp.

What size backpack do you need for hammock camping?

There is no single size that suits every trip. Summer systems can pack very small, while cold-weather insulation, extra clothing and longer trips require considerably more volume.

Does Silva make hammocks and underquilts?

No. Silva's role in a hammock camping setup is mainly lighting and carrying gear such as headlamps, camping lamps, backpacks and dry bags.
